Swedish Meatballs

Swedish Meatballs

Based heavily on the authentic Swedish Meatballs recipe, I've added my own personal and delicious flare!

The Swedish Know Their Stuff!

I used to make the generic Swedish meatball recipes, when I got curious about the origin and how strayed from the original all these online recipes became. Surprisingly, not surprising, most of these recipes that you'll find on the web do not even compare to the original. Missing some of the most robust ingredients, I decided to get back to basics. Then over time, I added my own flare while keeping the authenticity in place.

Swedish Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 lb Ground Pork
  • 1/2 cup Diced Yellow Onion
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Tbs Freshly Grated Ginger
  • 1 Tbs Fresh Thyme (And a little more for garnish)
  • 1/2 Tsp Allspice
  • 1/2 Tsp Nutmeg
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Pepper
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup Sour Cream
  • 2 Tbs Butter
  • 3 Tbs Flour
  • 1 1/2 Cups Beef Stock
  • 1 1/2 Cups Chicken Stock

Preparation

Meatballs

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, add the Beef, Pork, Onion, Breadcrumbs, Ginger, Thyme, Allspice, Nutmeg, Turmeric, Salt, Pepper, and Eggs and combine until all ingredients are evenly mixed
  • Shape the Meatball mixture into small, 1 inch balls and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet
  • Place in oven for 20 minutes, or until Meatballs internal temp reaches 145(f)

Sauce

  • In a sauce pan, melt the butter and slightly brown
  • Add in the Beef and Chicken Stock and bring to a simmer
  • Add in the Sour Cream and stir until it is combined
  • Sprinkle in the Flour while stirring and ensure it mixes well
  • Allow to simmer and thicken until it is the same consistency as gravy

Finishing Touches

  • On a plate, place a few of the meatballs down and pour a generous amount of sauce over top
  • Garnish with Thyme and serve!
